Description

The Clinical Genetic Counselor works as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, medical residents, and genetic counseling students. The role involves the evaluation, diagnosis, and follow-up care of a diverse pediatric and adult patient population in a vibrant, urban clinical setting.

The Clinical Genetic Counselor provides comprehensive genetic counseling services to individuals and families with a personal or family history of genetic disorders. Responsibilities include collecting and evaluating clinical and family history data, assessing genetic risks, offering supportive counseling, coordinating genetic testing, and serving as a patient advocate and educational resource for healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical information and psychosocial support to individuals and families affected by or at risk for birth defects and genetic disorders.
  • Interview patients and families to obtain detailed medical, pregnancy, and family/genetic histories; analyze collected data to identify relevant issues and deliver targeted genetic risk assessments.
  • Explain clinical features, inheritance patterns, and testing options for genetic disorders, including the benefits, limitations, and risks of testing.
  • Prepare and document patient and physician consultation letters, clinical notes, and reports.
  • Receive, triage, and respond appropriately to calls and inquiries from clinical staff and external referral sources.
  • Ensure genetic testing is ordered and completed in a timely manner with appropriate informed consent.
  • Coordinate shipment of specimens to in-house and external testing laboratories.
  • Provide follow-up genetic counseling and testing coordination, including explanation of normal and abnormal test results, drafting letters of medical necessity, and communicating results to patients and families via phone or written correspondence.
  • Supervise master’s-level genetic counseling students.
  • Participate in educational activities related to genetics and genetic counseling, including lectures, grand rounds, course instruction and coordination, thesis advising, and evaluation of genetic counseling students and clinical genetics fellows. 
  • Coordinate and support research projects associated with the Program for Clinical Genetics.
Qualifications
  • 2 years of genetic counseling experience
  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification within 3 years of graduation from Genetic Counseling Program.

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $85000 - $131538 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
