Automobile Insurance Claim Director – Legal

Location: Mount Prospect, IL (Hybrid: 3 days in-office / 2 remote)

Salary: $160,000 – $200,000 annually (commensurate with experience)

American Freedom Insurance Company (AFIC) , an A+ (Superior) rated, growing non-standard auto insurer, is seeking a highly experienced insurance professional to join our in-house Legal Defense Department. This senior-level role is critical to our litigation processing/oversight, excess loss mitigation, and high-exposure claims strategy.

You will work closely with legal counsel, adjusters, and executives to manage risk, improve outcomes, and ensure consistent, compliant handling of complex legal matters—without requiring a law license.

Your Responsibilities

• Hands on responsibility for oversight and strategic direction on a variety of claims including complex losses with potential excess exposure.
• Conduct in-depth file reviews in a high-volume environment and provide recommendations on and negotiate coverage strategy, legal positioning, and liability exposure.
• Maintain a diary on concerning loss files.
• Effectively and efficiently negotiate and settle legal claims as favorably as possible.
• Assist in developing internal protocols to identify, monitor, and mitigate high-dollar losses, including time-limited demands and bad faith triggers.
• Collaborate with internal departments (Claims, Underwriting, Executive) to ensure litigation strategies align with business objectives.
• Act as the primary liaison with outside defense counsel, providing settlement authority, ensuring alignment with AFIC goals and cost-effective litigation management.
• Mentor and guide junior staff on legal process awareness, best practices, and litigation oversight.
• Monitor emerging legal trends and recommend adjustments to internal strategies accordingly.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in insurance claims, legal operations, litigation management, or risk analysis—preferably in auto lines.
• Deep understanding of claims process, litigation timelines, policy interpretation, and excess/bad faith exposure.
• Proven good judgment in managing and negotiating high-severity claims and direct outside legal counsel.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present legal and strategic recommendations to non-legal stakeholders.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, efficient and adept at managing numerous high-priority matters.
