Job Title: Safety Specialist

Overview

The Heavy Industry Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment across all operations. This role conducts comprehensive safety audits, leads safety training and orientation, drives injury-risk prevention initiatives, and supports industrial hygiene programs in high-hazard environments.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Audits & Continuous Improvement

• Conduct regular workplace safety audits, inspections, and behavioral observations across production, maintenance, and field operations.
• Identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and systemic risk trends; develop corrective action plans with operations leadership.
• Lead root-cause analyses for incidents, near misses, and equipment failures; track and verify closure of corrective actions.
• Monitor compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements and assist with external audits.

Training & Orientation

• Develop and deliver new-hire safety orientation, contractor onboarding, and job-specific safety training.
• Maintain training records and ensure compliance with required regulatory training (LOTO, confined space, fall protection, hazard communication, etc.).
• Coach employees and supervisors on safe work practices and promote a strong safety culture.

Injury & Risk Prevention

• Assess high-risk tasks and work areas; perform Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and risk assessments.
• Implement ergonomic assessments and injury-reduction strategies tailored to heavy industrial tasks.
• Support return-to-work and injury case management in coordination with HR and environmental health teams.

Industrial Hygiene

• Participate in industrial hygiene monitoring programs including noise, air quality, dust, heat stress, and chemical exposure assessments.
• Assist in maintaining IH sampling records, controls, and engineering recommendations.
• Evaluate PPE requirements and ensure proper selection, fit, and use.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 3–7 years of safety experience in heavy industry (steel, manufacturing, foundry, refinery, construction, or similar).
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, NFPA, and industrial hygiene principles.
• Strong communication and training skills; able to influence at all organizational levels.
• Certifications preferred: OSHA 30, CPR/First Aid; ASP, CSP, CIH, or CHST a plus.
